Humidity – uncomfortable for us but important for nature

There’s a reason why humid climates have the greatest biodiversity, its due to high or frequent humidity within an atmosphere. These consistent humid atmospheres actually provide the least amount of environmental stress to an ecosystem, whether that is from climate stresses, like low temperatures and high rainfall or through competition for food sources.

Humidity, ecology

Biodiversity varies greatly with ecosystems and climates. The humid tropics have the greatest biodiversity, while the biodiversity decreases towards the north and south as the temperatures decrease. Also, less humidity is associated with decreasing species density.

So whilst we sit in our homes, in the UK, throughout June and September moaning about how humid it is…really we are experiencing the best environment for nature and should embrace it, or at least appreciate its benefits.

How to add ecology enhancement

Achieving gains through the input of ecology within development can be tough, especially if not included at the design stage. The main hurdles come from the lack of understanding by developers, missing the importance of ecology and how well ecology gains can help provide commercial benefits.Grass

There is an obvious lack of understanding of the benefits of including ecology within the initial design stage of any project. The first questions asked, at this stage, should always be ‘what will be the legacy of this project?’ or ‘how will the work we do here enable us to succeed our business?’. Two very simple and obvious questions that any successful business will subconsciously ask itself.

Ecology outputs offer an insight of a businesses focus, vision and forward thinking and today provide ‘the’ example of how success is measured outside of profit margins.

There are countless ways to incorporate ecology or biodiversity benefits and now there are legal requirements to seek enhancements and demonstrate ‘no net loss’.

What needs to be encouraged is the initial thinking within any development, in order to achieve these outputs; more importantly the ways in which ecology can benefit local landscapes, communities and ways in which businesses showcase their work.

The rewards are there for those who incorporate ecology within development, at Oakley Ecology we always encourage early engagement and aim to allow our clients to find gains and improve the marketability of their own services.
